Canberra, like most of Australia, has an ageing population. These baby boomers are often more savvy than previous generations with high expectations for their quality of life as they enter the latter years of their lives. An increasing number of retirees are looking to age in their community and this was well understood by the developer associated with this tri-plex development in Weetangera. The project brief was to achieve a medium density development that would be attractive to downsizers and to this end a number of options were explored at the project outset including two storey high yielding and single storey solutions. The developer opted for a lower yield solution and achieved three single storey townhouses with double garage accommodation. Each dwelling benefits from excellent northern solar access and private garden areas that are easily maintained. The architectural character of the development seeks to sit harmoniously in the existing streetscape and was well received by adjoining neighbours during the Development Application process.
