About the Project

Client:     Belconnen Magpies Football Club
Size:     369m²
Cost:     $3.3M
Date:     2011

AMC were engaged by Belconnen Magpies Football Club (BMFC) in December 2010 to prepare a concept design for a new pavilion and upgrade to Kippax No. 1 Oval, to support their submission for funding to the ACT Government. The submission was successful and Government funding of $2.2 million was made available in early 2011, with BMFC also contributing a further $200,000, Ginninderra Cricket Club contributing $40,000 and the potential for ‘contributions in kind’ by tradesmen and suppliers during the construction of the project.

The project included a new purpose-built pavilion with player change-rooms, rehabilitation rooms, umpire rooms, public toilets, and a large social room with a full and spectacular view of the playing surface. The pavilion also includes tiered, covered seating for approximately 150 spectators. The refurbishment of the oval was approximately 50% of the total project budget and involved a complete new playing surface, as well as new irrigation and drainage systems. The project was endorsed by the AFL, with the floor plan of the pavilion satisfying their standard pavilion requirements.

The building was constructed from a resilient palette of materials to ensure the longevity of the structure and minimise any susceptibility to vandalism. Architecturally, the building has a simple symmetrical form, with a striking cantilevered roof ensuring the building sits comfortably in its setting while offering excellent weather protection to patrons. The success of the project is a reflection of the commitment and hard work of the BMFC and the willingness of the ACT Government to partner with committed sporting organisations to provide excellent facilities for the benefit of the sporting clubs and indeed local community.
