St’s Peter and Paul Primary School Garran is prominently located adjacent to Yamba Drive. At the time of the BER works the school had recently benefited from refurbishment works to the library area and some class rooms. The school identified the further refurbishment of classrooms and a new Environmental Centre which could also be used for the after school care program. The refurbished classrooms included new wet areas, general refurbishment works and the inclusion of external bay windows to create a greater sense of area and to provide an opportunity to bring colourful elements into the façade treatment of the predominantly face-brick façade.
AMC developed a number of options for the proposed new Environmental Centre and a preferred option was established locating the new facility at the most prominent corner of the school adjacent the main car park. This new building contrasts significantly with the conservative character of the original school to create a striking new public address. It showcased a number of passive environmental features including a due north orientation, photo voltaic cells, water harvesting and a pergola designed to mitigate hash summer sunshine. It also included significant external landscaped areas including vegetable and herb growing beds, a timber bridge defining the entry into this new building and a water feature. It is now utilised by Kids Pantry, a very successful children’s cooking school for by after school care programs and school holiday programs noting that this was very much in the spirit of the original concept for the building to be utilised by the broader community. Finally the new Environmental Centre and associated landscape works have created a stronger address to the main school entry.
