About the Project

Client:     The Vikings Group
Size:     1,600m²
Cost:     $2M
Date:     2014

In 2013 AMC were successful in their bid to provide ongoing architectural services to the Vikings Group who have 4 clubs in the Tuggeranong Valley – Erindale, Chisholm, Lanyon and Greenway. With the majority of clubs having had little refurbishment works over the past 20 years, the management team were committed to a rollout of staged refurbishment works.

The first project was the Lanyon Club where AMC were engaged to prepare a master plan to establish a staged refurbishment strategy including internal and some external works. This included a new Sports Bar and Tab facility on the lower level with a new connecting staircase and a full refurbishment of the upper floor including the decommissioning of two bars and the construction of a new central bar.

The first area to be completed was the lower level Sports Bar / Tab and an associated new central staircase. Given the club’s somewhat remote location, and a lack of alternative venues for a younger demographic, the Vikings Group sought a sports bar that would be appealing to its existing patrons but which would also become a destination venue for younger members.

The final solution consisted of a modern finishes palette with warmth achieved through the use of timber flooring and wall cladding. Colour was introduced through upholstery fabrics and loose furniture. The existing ceilings were removed and the soffits and services were painted out black to provide an added sense of height, with pendant lights and acoustic panels suspended to enhance the atmosphere. A memorabilia wall and interesting graphics also helped this once left over space become the source of renewed interest for existing patrons while helping attract new members to the club.
