AMC delivered Microsoft’s original fitout at Level 4, 6 National Circuit Barton in December 2013. In late 2016, Microsoft invited AMC to design an expansion to this original fitout on Level 3 of the same building. Microsoft had recently rolled out a new set of global design guidelines “Design Language for Place” that superseded the previous guidelines that were current at the time of the original fitout.
The Level 3 space was required to provide additional staff accommodation with focus rooms, meeting spaces, phone booths, staff lockers and breakout facilities as well as offices for IT team leads. The challenge for AMC was to achieve consistency with the original fitout while simultaneously aligning with the new guidelines within a compressed program. Through the use of soft furnishings, timber elements, light fixtures, acoustic screening elements, wall panelling and splashes of colour inspired by the Microsoft brand, AMC created a mix of informal “retreat” spaces, formal meeting areas and focus rooms successfully achieving a consistent design language across the two floors that is simple, contemporary, fun and practical.
