Canberra’s Social Housing Problem
Given the ongoing rental and community housing supply crisis in Canberra and the limited accommodation options available for vulnerable women in the ACT, AMC and the YWCA Canberra welcomed Mick Gentleman’s recent decision to “call in” the approval of the YWCA Supportive Housing development in Ainslie, following a protracted DA process.
This decision is an important symbol for Canberra if more is to be achieved in a timely manner. Indeed, there are calls for critical developments such as this one to be assessed via a separate approvals process to mitigate delays and ensure that social housing is made available to a growing cohort of Canberrans that are unable to access crisis and transitional accommodation.
