A new gateway and end-of-trip facility for a bustling commercial precinct.

AMC was initially engaged by CAG to assist with the redevelopment of the existing gym and end of trip facilities at Brindabella Business Park (BBP) at Canberra International Airport. The existing gym, one of the first buildings constructed within the precinct, required an update to meet the demands of BBP users and better align it with the quality of the facilities generally offered by CAG.  The brief initially required a simple refurbishment of the existing amenities and an extension of the gymnasium. However, design investigations established that this approach would not adequately achieve CAG’s objectives and that a new, larger facility was required.

The new Wellness Hub comprises a 500m2 gymnasium, small café, substantial end of trip facilities and a new secure bike area accommodating up to 150 bikes. A pedestrian link is provided through the building to the adjacent carpark, such that the building will act as a gateway to BBP users and visitors arriving at BBP via car or bicycle. The Hub’s distinctive sculptural form sets it apart as an iconic marker building and a destination in its own right. The low scale nature of the building with its semi-transparent and layered skin of timber battens, backed by dark grey metal and glazing creates a soft and inviting counterpoint to the relatively hard aluminium-clad corporate buildings of BBP.
