Motor Vehicle Inspection Station
AMC was initially involved in the preparation of a client-side brief for the ACT Government for a new purpose-built Motor Vehicle Inspection Station (MVIS) before our engagement for the design of the ultimate new development at Hume with Nikias Diamond Property Developments. This new facility replaces the previous Dickson inspection station which, constructed in the 1970’s, had reached the end of its serviceable life due to problems with large vehicle access and the imminent redevelopment of the Northbourne corridor associated with the new light rail.
The project brought together the requirements of a number of different user groups, the coordination and planning of a relatively complex set of requirements, sign-off and delivery of a comprehensive set of functional statements, room data sheets and specifications to allow the project to be confidently tendered to the market as a turn-key lease-back project between government and the private sector. The design concept incorporates a logical and linear one-way traffic arrangement facilitating a pre- and post- inspection flow and accommodates complex in-ground servicing requirements including inspection pits and associated services. The structure features an elegant and simple extruded skillion roofed form that expresses the industrial character of the facility’s function with a resilient materials palette including pre-cast concrete panels and Kliplok Colorbond roofing.
