AMC has provided architectural, interior design and project management services to the National Museum of Australia (NMA) for a range of capital works projects since 2011. AMC’s initial engagement was to provide local architectural support to Principal Architect, ARM, in addition to project management services during the construction of the Café Extension and New Administration Building, both of which were highly complex in terms of design, program, latent conditions and budget management.

Following the successful completion of this project, AMC was subsequently engaged to design and deliver a cost effective, light touch refurbishment of the NMA’s Gift Shop within the main Museum building. The works included modifying the existing layout of the Shop to improve access and circulation, a new retail counter to increase layout spaces for inventory management, pricing of stock and an additional point of sale terminal and new merchandise display systems and joinery. AMC developed a compelling design concept which responded to the organic architectural form of the Museum building providing an innovative solution which achieves a distinctive, cohesive experience for patrons and Shop operators with a high degree of functionality. The clever incorporation of storage into new and existing joinery elements provides functionality within a relatively constrained footprint with the use of natural materials and a contrasting colour palette creating a striking retail interface for the Museum. AMC continues to maintain an excellent working relationship with the Museum and has since assisted the NMA in successfully upgrading and refurbishing its main Temporary Gallery space.
