The Red Shed
The Black Mountain Rowing Shed (Red Shed) is the physical realisation of the significant efforts by Jega to create a “world-class rowing facility for all”. The programs offered by the Red Shed focus on increased engagement with a broad range of demographics.
Sited on the western side of the Black Mountain peninsula on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin the two-storey building is divided into two clear programs; the predominant but intrinsic boat storage at ground level (supported by changeroom and sports wellness and recovery facilities) and the upper level club comprising a public café, multi-purpose hall and gym spaces. A generous, elevated pathway connects the upper level to the existing lakeside pedestrian and bicycle network, with the RED Shed’s distinctive branding on show in the form of a bold, integrated lighting strategy and accessible building signage.
The evocative device of the curved hull of a rowing boat inspired the sculptural white roof form which wraps around the building offering expansive views to the North and East and clear sightlines to the rowing line and foreshore, and a deep recess to the West to provide shading to the external viewing deck. AMC and Jega worked closely with Harris Hobbs to limit impact to the existing adjacent Casuarina trees and ensure the building settles into the Black Mountain context.
The external materials palette of pre-finished steel, framed glass and precast concrete is commensurate with the building’s prominence and sensitive location with the selection of resilient materials ensuring the RED Shed’s longevity and enduring legacy within Canberra. Internally, reclaimed hardwood surfaces, Oriented Strand Boards (OSB) and terracotta tiles take their cue from the facility’s natural surroundings that are framed by extensive glazing that create inviting, light-filled spaces. The building is supported by high performance glazing to balance the orientation with heat gain, solar panels and electric plant to fulfill JEGA’s vision for a socially sustainable lasting legacy for the community.
